Set of 4 slate coasters with the “Hunab Ku” design engraved into the stone. The Hunab Ku was originally based on traditional Mayan symbols representing completely different concepts rather from its implied meaning in modern day. The symbol was modified taking inspiration from other symbols such as the yin Yang and other cultures by colonial travelers and created to present the idea of “one god”. This was originally intended as  a way of conquest by doing away with the many god format and presenting the concept to the Mayan people with the purpose of conversion into the Christian religious belief system. Although the dark origins of the symbol that resulted in the decimation of a culture, the existing followers and people of Mexico have compltely changed the representation of the symbol into a beautiful concept that is used widely. The symbol now represents the reflection of each other in two beings and duality. Often represented in speech by the term “In Lak’ech, ala k’in“, roughly translated to ” I am another you, you are another me” which is often a speak and respond greeting along with a symbolic handshake resembling the Hunab Ku symbol. The Hunab Ku has taken its concept of one deity and transformed itself into a representation  of oneness and union between people instead all the while recognizing the differences among one another.
